Choosing a company name is one of the first and most important steps when incorporating a business in Malaysia. A strong company name not only reflects your brand identity but also must comply with guidelines set by the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM)

Whether you’re starting a new enterprise or rebranding an existing business, here’s what you need to know to choose the right name for your company.

Understand the Requirements by SSM

Before submitting your proposed name, ensure it complies with the Guidelines for Naming a Company issued by SSM.

• Must not be identical or too similar to an existing company name
• Cannot be misleading, offensive or contain prohibited words (e.g. “Royal”, “Bank”, “Government”)
• Names with control word (e.g. “Institute”, “University”, “Capital”) require approval from relevant authorities or supporting documents.

• Be memorable and easy to pronounce
• Match your brand tone

Check Name Availability with SSM

Before decide with a name, make sure it’s available:

• Use the MyCOID System to check if your proposed name already taken.
• Avoid names that are identical or too similar to existing companies.

Think Long-Term

Choose a name that:

• Will still make sense if you expand your offerings.
• Won’t limit your growth or future markets
• Can be used for website domains and social media
  * Do a domain search early, your online presence is important

Secure the Name Legally

Once your name is approved, it’s important to register it quickly. This can be done during the company incorporation process through SSM.
If you are not ready to incorporate, you can apply for name reservation for 30 days (extendable)
